Patron Guidelines


All University IT computing facilities are open to University of Rochester students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Patrons are requested to comply with all of the following guidelines as well as the standards of ethics and conduct in the use of any ATS facilities. Responsible patron behavior includes consideration for other users, as well as efficient use of computing resources.

    ID PolicyBe prepared to show your University of Rochester ID upon request. Only people with current UR IDs are allowed to use University IT facilities.

    Food and DrinkAre only allowed in study areas! No food or drink are allowed in any computing areas. This policy also includes water and candy. The use of all tobacco products is also prohibited in any facility.

    Camping PolicyCamping is not allowed, therfore, try to avoid leaving your computer unattended. If you leave, please return within 15 minutes. If you are away from your computer for more than 15 minutes and the machine is needed, your document will be saved and your belongings moved behind the consultant desk.

    Software may not be copied; violation of this policy is a federal offense.

    Do not modify any hardware, software, or system configurations on any machine. Please ask a consultant for assistance if you find a problem; do not attempt to fix it yourself. Do not install any software!

    Noise Levels: Are to be kept to a minimum. Please study quietly in a group and respect others around you. Headphones are required for the use of radios and for any computer applications which use sound.

    The computers are for academic non-profit use only. Game playing of any kind is not allowed with the exception of assigned homework which we will verify.

    Note the posted list of times that any classroom is reserved for classes. Schedules will be posted on classroom doors, or call x5-2000.

    Be prepared to leave the facilities promptly at closing time, the staff is not authorized to keep the facilities open any later than posted. Begin printing 15 minutes prior to closing.

    In case of a fire drill, you must save your work and immediately leave the facility.

    Guide dogs are the only animals allowed in University IT facilities.

    Rollerblades must be removed upon entering any facility. Bicycles and scooters as per University policy, are also not allowed.

    Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

    Check Lost & Found for misplaced items.

    Please use the suggestion boxes to let us know how we are doing and for any special requests you might have. If you would like a personal response, please include your name, phone number, and email address on your suggestion form.

For more information regarding any of these policies, ask to speak to a manager or supervisor. These guidelines are for your benefit and will help University IT to better serve your studying and computing needs.
