Welcome to the University IT Desktop Encryption Service
As part of a University-wide program to improve data security, we are deploying full disk encryption for designated departments that handle high-risk sensitive data.
Full Disk Encryption is the encryption (protection of data from unauthorized access) of data on all areas of the computer’s internal hard disk. Data that is saved to external devices or media, such as jump drives or CDs, will not be encrypted and may be exposed to unauthorized personnel. If external media devices are needed to transport sensitive data, please contact your Information Security Department for protection options. Encryption of external devices, external media, and smart phones will be addressed in the next phase of the full disk encryption project.
Installation
University and local IT team members will be installing encryption software on desktop and laptop computers and will be contacting you to schedule a convenient time.
The average install requires less than a half hour. This time to encrypt the hard drive is dependent on the size of drive. Once installed, you may continue working on the computer while the hard drive is encrypted.
