Policy on Social Security Number & Personal Identifying Information
Universities face an ever growing need to protect the personal information of faculty, staff, and students and to reduce the risk of identity theft. In response, the University of Rochester has adopted a formal policy on the collection, maintenance and distribution of Social Security numbers (SSN) and Personal Identifying Information (PII) in January 2009.
- Within the policy, a Custodian is the person who POSSESSES or is responsible for CONTROLLING ACCESS to Social Security numbers and Personal Identifying Information.
- Use of Social Security numbers and Personal Identifying Information needs to be LIMITED, REGISTERED, and PROTECTED.
- Social Security numbers and Personal Identifying Information are classified as Legally
Restricted Information within Section III of the University’s IT
Policy.
