University of Rochester Announces New Partnership With Oracle Corporation

March 20, 2006 - - University of Rochester Information Technology Services (ITS) has been working with Oracle Corporation for the past 45 days to negotiate an ongoing relationship for significant improved savings on specific Oracle products and maintenance through a site license. ITS is pleased to announce that negotiations have been completed and the University now holds a site license for the Oracle database product. This site license will significantly reduce costs for the University and ITS estimates that the savings will be hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next several years.

“This concentrated effort was fueled by increased demand from the University community as Oracle is consistently the most requested site license product,” according to Julie Buehler, Interim Co-CIO and Director of ITS Planning, Finance and Administration. “We took this community feedback, evaluated the needs across the University, and determined it was clear we needed to obtain a site license in order to provide cost-effective technology to support the University’s rapid system growth and need to modernize many systems.”

With a site license, the University can avoid high costs that come with growth and system upgrades and departments can avoid expensive, individual licenses that were required prior to the site license. Departments will also benefit from a cleaner administration process and easier accessibility to the product. “We are actively working with our vendor partners to lower costs and effect multiple positive outcomes across the University,” says Dave Lewis, Interim Vice Provost and Chief Information Officer. “Oracle usage has been swiftly growing and the costs to purchase independent licenses have been escalating with it.” This is a major step for the University because it will allow users to manage and consolidate their information with a comprehensive set of higher education and research solutions that will allow for growth and innovation in support of the University’s mission.

Impact on the University

What this means in financial terms for the entire University of Rochester community is that each time departments or individuals are considering a technological solution that utilizes an Oracle database, the cost for that solution can be reduced when budgeting. In effect, the entire University community has unlimited access to the Enterprise Edition of the Oracle Database. And, because the University has licensed the Enterprise Edition users will no longer have to opt for the Standard Edition of the Oracle Database because of cost concerns and limitations. Participating users are now able to leverage all of the features included in the Enterprise Edition which includes tools for disaster recovery, availability, security, and performance.

Current Oracle Users

University faculty and staff who have licensing agreements directly with Oracle for the Database are immediately able to take advantage of the site license and receive the new discounts. As ITS identifies the current individual Oracle database licenses owned by the University and Affiliate organizations, they will automatically be rolled into the site license. A letter explaining the cost savings and maintenance agreement will be sent to existing users within the next week.
