Gmail FAQ

@Rochester

Each student, upon receipt of their URgmail account, is outfitted with a 'firstname.lastname@rochester.edu' email alias which points to your URgmail account. If you are interested in this option (as opposed to your default account, 'NetID@u.rochester.edu'), please see this tutorial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this service offered?

The new Student Email Service was implemented as an upgrade from the previous student email service, mail.rochester.edu. The new service provides students with far more storage (6GB), makes finding contact information and sharing documents much easier, and implements a Calendar platform for better time management.

What features are available in the University of Rochester student email system?

Web based access to email allows for easy access from any computer with internet access and a web browser. Integrated email features such as spell check, folder functionality and rule management, configurable email filters, incoming and outgoing virus scan, anti-spam mechanism, and faculty and staff address books. There are limited banners or advertisements. 6 gigabytes of storage allows you to store more messages and documents. In addition, students will have full access to Google's Documents and Calendar features, which integrate fully with the new Student Email platform.

Who is eligible to receive a URgmail account?

Any part-time or full-time matriculated undergraduate student is eligible for a URgmail account.

Will all of my saved email messages be available in my new account?

Yes. All messages you have saved at the time of migration will appear in your new Inbox under the title of "migrated_[foldername]", where [foldername] is the name of the folder that your saved message is currently stored in.

How do I set up my Student Email account with a "first.last@rochester.edu" alias?

See this tutorial.

I already have a non-school account with Gmail. Can I put all of my messages into one Inbox?

Yes, you can. You will need to add the account first (either non-school into Student Email Service, or vice versa), and then add the imported account as a new personality (so that you can send messages from one Inbox). For more on the latter functionality, see our Tutorials page.

Can I forward my URgmail messages to another Gmail account?

Yes, you can. Please be aware, however, that if you set up this forward, ALL messages in your URgmail Inbox (post-migration) will be forwarded to your separate Gmail Inbox.

How long will my forward remain in effect from my old mail.rochester account?

The forward will remain in place as long as you maintain a student relationship with the University. Once you graduate, transfer, or leave, your account will be disabled and forwarding will stop approximately 4 months after you leave.

I send my email to a client via POP or IMAP. How do I do this in URgmail?

Click here to sync your password with URgmail so that your password matches up with the password saved with Google. This syncing will allow your POP/IMAP to work.

For assistance enabling your account for POP/IMAP access, view the following Google tutorials: POP :: IMAP

I have forgotten my email password. How do I have it reset?

You will have to fill out the reset password request form (you will need to know your Student ID number). For assistance, contact the IT Center at 275-2000. If you do change your NetID password and you have POP/IMAP access enabled for your email, you will have to re-synchronize your password.

What is my official Student Email address?

New accounts follow this structure: netid@u.rochester.edu, where "netid" is your NetID.

I have first.last forwarding set up, but still see my @u.rochester.edu address on my Student Email page. Is my first.last forwarding not working?

Your first.last alias will not show up in the top right corner of your Student Email environment, but that's OK - your first.last forwarding should still work. If it doesn't, please contact the IT Center at 275-2000.

How do I log in to my Student Email account?

Click here and simply enter your NetID and password.

Can I transfer my Address Book from my mail.rochester.edu webmail to my new Student Email account?

Transferring Address Books from webmail is not supported during migration. If you would like assistance saving these contacts to manually add once your account is migrated, please contact the IT Center at 275-2000 or email itscenter@rochester.edu PRIOR TO YOUR MIGRATION DATES.

Can I transfer Blackboard (my.rochester.edu student portal) calendar information to my Gmail account?

Blackboard (or the my.rochester.edu student portal) calendar does not support the import or export data functions, so you won’t be able to transfer Blackboard calendar information to your Student Email calendar and vice versa.

Can I transfer Entourage calendar information to my Student Email calendar?

Transferring calendar information from Entourage to Student Email calendar directly is not supported. You can, however, transfer your Entourage calendar to iCal (Macintosh) and then transfer that iCal information to your Student Email calendar.

How can I be certain that my Student Email session is completely “logged out”?

By selecting “Sign Out” or by closing your browser you will end your session.

How do I find my professor’s email address while using Student Email?

Click "Compose Mail". Under the "To:" field, click "Choose from Contacts". Enter the last name of the person you're searching for; their name should pop up. Clicking that name will add that person to the "To:" field.

Can I make Student Email my default email application when clicking email links in a web browser?

You can. Currently, you'll need Firefox 3 installed in order to do this; Google provides its own instructions on how to set this up. Once completed, this will work for Student Email as well.

When I send messages to a mailing list, all members of the list show up in the "To:" field when the message is sent. How do I prevent this?

In order to prevent this from happening, add the list you are sending to in the "Bcc:" (blind carbon copy) field.

Can I use the Gmail for mobile application on my Windows Mobile device?

Google does not support the Gmail application for Windows Mobile devices at this time.
