University Wireless Network

University IT continues to work with users of the University’s wireless network on migrating to the new and enhanced wireless service.

The two new access choices are UR_RC_InternalSecure and UR_RC_Internal.

We encourage users to use the UR_RC_InternalSecure connection if their computer is able to connect with WPA (WiFi Protected Access). This provides additional security by encrypting traffic between a personal computer and the wireless network. If you need the password to log on using this connection, visit the website or contact us. The second network choice, UR_RC_Internal, is for users that are unable to take advantage of the Encrypted service.

Map showing coverage for URWireless

The University of Rochester has wireless connectivity - URWireless - in common areas of River Campus.

Want to check your e-mail while sitting under a shade tree on the Quad, or send Mom an instant message while studying in the stacks?

Faculty, Staff and Students who have a wireless enabled laptop and a Net ID can connect to the network, surf the web, check grades, access library resources - do it all with no wires!

If you are not a member of the UR community, but need access to our wireless network, you can have a faculty, staff, or student in the University sponsor your access.

Click here for more information about our Guest NetID program.

How Wireless Works

University Information Technology installed access points around campus and these access points connect to the University network. With a wireless network interface card (NIC) in your laptop and your Net ID login, you connect to the network using radio frequency instead of a wire. You can roam around in the areas that have coverage without losing your connection as different access points provide the signal your NIC card needs to stay connected. Please note that coverage will vary depending on your equipment.
