What is the data warehouse?

The data warehouse is composed of a set of reporting databases, reporting tools (i.e., Impromptu) and support for using the tools to enable staff across the University to create their own reports. Data in these databases is extracted from various production databases and is organized for optimal reporting ease of use. All data warehouse data is read only.

Why should I use the data warehouse?

The data warehouse will enable you to produce reports on University information on demand. Information can easily be printed locally or downloaded to other locations, such as desktop spreadsheets.

How do I use the data warehouse?

We support the reporting tool called Impromptu.

What data is available?

The University's Financial Records System
The University's Cumulative Salary Information System
The University's Alumni/Fund Raising Information System
The University's Building and Room Information System

Hours of Availability

The data warehouse is generally available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Exceptions to this availability may be brief periods of unavailability during the loading of new data which would normally occur after 7 pm or on weekends. See the information about the particular data family to determine the frequency of loading new data. If we need to perform software or hardware maintenance, the data warehouse may also be unavailable for periods of time. We normally notify users via e-mail when we expect maintenance to make the warehouse unavailable.

How do I get started?

buy the software  fill out the appropriate security forms  arrange for the software install  take the class!

What ongoing support is provided?

Ongoing support in the use of the data warehouse is available in the following ways:

ITS Help Desk - call x52000 or send e-mail to eur@acs.rochester.edu if you have a general or technical question. You will be referred to someone who can answer your questions.
Impromptu Users Group - meets once a month to discuss more advanced Impromptu topics of interest
Phone/e-mail consultation - available to help people with their use of the data warehouse.
Frequently Asked Questions - Impromptu FAQs and data family specific FAQs: FRS , Cumsal , FIST , Space are documented on this site.
"Ready-to-run reports" - already written Impromptu queries are available on this site. These queries are described and ready to be saved to and run from a user's PC. Each query will generate an Impromptu report with data based on a user's security profile and responses to the query prompts.
Announcements - system and data specific alerts and general news items are shared with Impromptu users via e-mail as needed.
