AREA CODE CHANGE
Please note that, as of Nov. 15, 2001, the area code for the Greater
Rochester area changes from 716 to 585. (Buffalo and its surrounding
area will continue to use 716.) From Nov. 15, 2001 until Aug. 16,
2002, both 716 and 585 will work for someone calling long-distance to
Rochester numbers. After Aug. 16, 2002, those using 716 for a
Rochester-area number will hear a recorded message telling them about
the new area code, and that message will continue to be heard until
Spring of 2003.
The area code change affects almost all phone lines at the University
of Rochester, except for some numbers of University affiliate offices
located well beyond the immediate metropolitan area.
The change includes three phases:
- Phase I - is a permissive dialing phase. It begins November 15,
2001. Permissive means that either the "716" or "585" number can be
dialed.
- Phase II - begins August 17, 2002. This is being described as
"Mandatory with Intercept." This phase is when all of our customers
should be dialing the appropriate area code. During Phase II the
"585" area code must be dialed to reach the University. If "716" is
dialed the caller will be sent to an intercept recording informing
them of the change.
- Phase III - May 16, 2003 - the caller will no longer be sent to an
intercept recording informing them to dial "585."
Those at the University should remember:
- To make sure that when ordering stationery and business cards for
use after Nov. 15, 2001, the new area code is used. (Of course,
existing stationery with the 716 area code can still be used well
after that date.)
- To change their office or department's Web pages to reflect the new area code.
(The University Web Services can assist you
with search and replace methods and tips for dealing with large sites.)
- To inform those who might try to reach your office--especially
through pre-set "speed-dials" on their fax machines or phones, or by calling
your pager--that your area code has changed.
- Cingular Wireless and Sprint PCS representatives will be onsite (see schedule below) to answer questions regarding the impact of the area code change on cellular phones as well as the new "Hands Free" legislation.
- Those individuals who carry University Sprint PCS phones will have their phone
automatically re-programmed with the new area code on February 1, 2002. Individuals
who carry personal Sprint PCS phones should meet with a Sprint representative
to have their phone reprogrammed with the new area code or should call Sprint
from a land line to receive instructions on how to reprogram their phone.
At the time the phone is reprogrammed to the (585) area code Sprint customers
should note that their VOICEMAIL must be re-set and all messages on the old
number (716) will be lost.
- Cingular Wireless will not be making programming changes due to the area code change until 2004, as a result if you carry a phone from Cingular you do not need to have any changes made to your phone. Cingular users will have permissive dialing until 2004.
