Glossary of terms used in the ClassTech web pages

DVD

Digitial Versatile Disc, or Digital Video Disc. A double sided disc that is the same size as a compact disc (5 inches), but holds over four times the amount of information. Typical DVD usage is for movies due to superior sound and video quality over VHS video tape.

LaserDisc, LD

A double sided disc that is about the size of a record (12 inches). LD's are an older technology than DVD's, and often require both sides of a disc to hold a movie. ClassTech LD players require someone to flip the disc in this case. LD's have better sound and video quality than VHS video tapes.

Monitor

All televisions are referred to as 'Monitors' at ClassTech. Technically a 'Monitor' is a TV that does not have the ability to tune in stations.

Projector (computer, video)

The term 'video projector' is used loosely at ClassTech to describe any piece of equipment that displays a video or computer source on a projection screen. 'Computer projector' refers specifically to the newer video projectors that can handle the higher resolutions necessary for computer support.

VGA

Video Graphics Array. This is a reference to a computer resolution of 640 pixels wide by 480 pixels high. VGA projectors are no longer provided for computer requests.

XGA

eXtended Graphics Array. This is a reference to a computer resolution of 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high. The XGA projectors available from Classtech are 3000 lumens or brighter, and can typically handle resolutions from 640x480 to 1600x1200 in emulation mode. XGA projectors are permanently available in over 60 locations.

SXGA

Super eXtended Graphics Array. This is a reference to a computer resolution of 1280 pixels wide by 1024 pixels high. The projectors in Hoyt and Hubbell auditoriums are currently the only SXGA native projectors available in the River Campus classrooms.

UXGA

Ultra eXtended Graphics Array. This is a reference to a computer resolution of 1600 pixels wide by 1200 pixels high. Most projectors offered by Classroom Technology will display this resolution.
