Changing your password by logging in directly
If you use Netscape Mail or Outlook Express, you may need to LOGIN to mail.rochester.edu or troi.cc.rochester.edu using SSH to change your password, since these programs do not currently have password changing capabilities.
- If your account is on mail.rochester.edu, you may change your password using the Web Password Changer.
- Otherwise, you will need to LOGIN to mail.rochester.edu or troi.cc.rochester
.edu using SSH to set a permanant password.
Before following these directions, you must be connected to mail.rochester.edu. To find out how to do so, read Connecting using SSH.
If you see a mail% or troi% prompt
- Type passwd and press enter.
- At the prompt, type your current password.
- The system will them prompt you for a new password. Type a new password which follows these guidelines:
- at least six characters long
- have at least two alphabetic characters and at least one numeric or special character within the first 8 characters
- differ from the old password by at least three characters.
- The system will then prompt you to confirm your new password. Type your new password again.
- You can now log out by typing logout and pressing enter.
If you see an Old Password: or Enter login password: prompt
This means that your password is expired, and you are required to change it.
- At the prompt, type your current password. If you have been given a temporary password, enter it.
- The system will them prompt you for a new password. Type a new password which follows these guidelines:
- at least six characters long
- have at least two alphabetic characters and at least one numeric or special character within the first 8 characters
- differ from the old password by at least three characters.
- The system will then prompt you to confirm your new password. Type your new password again.
- Your password is now changed. The system may close your connection automatically.
