ITS recommends the Windows XP Professional Operating System except
in cases where:
- Critical application software is unsupported by the OS. See the chart
below for a list of applications in common use at the University.
- The departmental Network Administrator wishes to hold workstations
at a lower level.
Network Security
Windows XP and Windows 2000 workstation security is much more complex than earlier
versions. It is important to consult with your Network Administrator to safeguard
your workstation. Many departments (including ITS) have specific guidelines.
Recommendations include:
- Rename the Administrator user account to something else.
- Password the Administrator user account with a secure password.
- Install an antivirus software application (see http://www.infosec.rochester.edu/antivirus/ )
Hardware Compatibility
Any newly purchased workstation that arrives pre-installed with the Windows XP
Professional Operating System should work without problems in the University
environment. If you do not have a workstation, please consult with your Network
Administrator. The Computer Sales web site is (
http://www.rochester.edu/its/css ).
Many older workstations can be upgraded to Windows XP Professional. The recommended
minimum confguration for upgrade is:
- 256 MB of RAM
- PII 350 MHz Processor
- 6 GB hard disk
- SVGA video adapter (2 MB RAM or greater)
- CD Drive
- 10 mb Ethernet network adapter
**Please note that while this configuration will
support Windows XP Professional, it may not meet the needs of your specific applications
and may perform at a speed unsuitable for your needs.
Software Compatibility
Any newly purchased workstation that arrives pre-installed with the Windows XP
Professional Operating System should work without problems in the University
environment.
Many software vendors released new software versions specifically for this new
OS. Check with the vendor for compatibility issues before installing any programs.
Microsoft provides more detailed information about using existing hardware and
software with Windows XP. Please see http://microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/default.asp
ITS Software Compatibility Evaluation
ITS evaluates commonly used software applications under new Microsoft
Windows operating systems. The Supported, Not Supported or Supported
but Under Review. The evaluation process includes:
Examining application and Microsoft documentation.
- Perusing newsgroups devoted to the application.
- In-house testing.
