University of Rochester Private Address Assignment

For purposes of IP address conservation, we are now using private addresses, as defined in RFC 1918, within the U of R networks.

Per RFC 1918, private IP addresses may be assigned to machines which will NEVER be allowed to access the Internet. Examples might be printers, in-band accessible network hardware, etc.

We have currently assigned 172.17.0.0, 172.18.0.0 and 172.27.0.0 to the Medical Center for internal unrestricted use.

172.30.0.0 has been assigned for use by the rest of the University. Subnets within 172.30.0.0 will be assigned to match the subnets currently used within 128.151.x.x. In other words, if a network administrator on the 128.151.214.0 subnet requests use of private addresses, an address of 172.30.214.0 would be assigned.

We will only add these to the DNS and routing tables on request since we want to avoid adding a lot of extra and unused routing information on the backbone.

Network administrators may request use of these addresses via email to hostmaster@utd.rochester.edu.

There are problems associated with use of private IP addresses. If a department is using a caching DNS server, its users will not be able to resolve IP addresses to host names for the private addresses. And, of course, hosts configured with those addresses will not be able to access the Internet.

Note that 172.29.0.0 and 172.31.0.0 are being used by Networking and Communications Services (NCS) (formerly UTD) for address conservation in wide area and point to point links.
