USER AGREEMENT, GUIDELINES, & ETIQUETTE

User Agreement | User Etiquette | Password Reset

Password Reset Procedures

Users have the ability to change their passwords whenever they feel necessary by logging into mail.rochester.edu or troi.cc.rochester.edu and using the passwd command from their prompt and following the directions.

ITS encourages users on Mail and Troi to change their passwords on a periodic basis to keep their accounts secure. If users do not change their password at least once every four months, they will be required to do so by the system. All users on Mail and Troi will receive seven days notice to reset their password with instructions on how to do so. If a user does not change their password within that seven day time frame, they will be forced to change it the next time they login.

If You Forgot Your Password

Users who are in the Greater Rochester area have these two options if they forget their password for their Mail or Troi account:

  • Users can come in-person to the ITS Center in CLARC between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday thru Friday, and request their password be reset. Users must bring a valid UR ID card or some other type of valid picture identification with them to get their password reset.

  • Users who cannot come to the ITS Center for a password reset during the posted times, can contact ITS at x5-2000 and schedule an appointment with a member of the UNIX group to get their password reset at another time.

ITS will not reset a password for a user who is in the Greater Rochester area over the phone. The user must speak with a member of the UNIX Group in-person. There are NO exceptions to this for anyone in the Greater Rochester area.

All users who are not in the Greater Rochester Area must complete the Long Distance Password Reset Request Form and send us the necessary information. The user can either download and print a copy of this form themselves, or ITS can fax or mail them a copy of this form. The user must complete all of the necessary information on the form and send it back to ITS to be processed. The user has two options when completing this form:

  • If the user ran the away command and supplied a pass phrase in that process, they need to write that pass phrase on their request form. If the pass phrase matches and all of the other information is correct on the form, ITS will then contact the user within one business day and reset their password.

  • If the user did not run the away command, did not supply us with a pass phrase, or did not write the correct pass phrase on their request form, they will be required to get their request form notarized by a notary official. Once the form is notarized and we verify the individual's identity, we will then reset the user's password.

ITS will not accept requests for password resets via e-mail, over the phone, or any other method that is not described above. Do not send ITS your social security number, your password, or any other personal information via e-mail. Email is a very insecure medium for sending this information and ITS will not use it to distribute confidential information to people.
