Connecting using SSH

If you use Netscape Mail or Outlook Express, you may need to LOGIN to mail.rochester.edu or troi.cc.rochester.edu using SSH or telnet to change your password, since these programs do not currently have password changing capabilities. This document outlines how to use two supported terminal programs.

Connecting: Macintosh

If your Mac OS version is 10.15 or higher then you already have ssh capability. Go to applications, then utilities, then terminal. Launch terminal. Once in terminal, type ssh yourusername@mail.rochester.edu

  • For troi access: Substitute mail.rochester.edu for troi.cc.rochester.edu

If your Mac OS version is 10.1 or under it does not come with a telnet or SSH client built in. ITS suggests that you download NiftyTelnet SSH to connect to Mail or Troi. This program can be found at:

    http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jonasw/freeware/niftyssh/

Once you have downloaded NiftyTelnet SSH, follow these instructions to set up a connection to mail.rochester.edu:

    1. Open NiftyTelnet SSH. The New Connection dialog box should appear.
    2. Click New...
    3. When the dialog box appears, perform the following:
      1. For Shortcut Name, type Mail.
      2. For Host Name, type mail.rochester.edu
      3. From the Protocol popup menu, select "SSH - Blowfish".
      4. Click OK
If you are connecting to Troi, replace "Mail" with "Troi" and "mail.rochester.edu" with "troi.cc.rochester.edu".
    4. Select the connection you just created from the list, and click "connect".
    5. After a short pause, a dialog will appear prompting you for your User Name and Password. Type them.
    6. If you are given a TERM prompt, press enter.
    7. You are now connected to Mail (or Troi), and ready to change your password.

  • Connecting: Windows

Windows does not have a secure telnet application. ITS suggests that you download and install either Tera Term Pro or SSH Secure Shell 3.2.5 to connect to your Email.

    Tera Term Pro

    1. First download Tera Term Pro client version 2.3 :

      Client TTERMPRO:  TTermp23.zip (943,376 bytes)

    2. Next, download the SSH add on version 1.5.4 .

      SSH Extension: TTssh154.zip

    3. Once you have both pieces downloaded unzip them to their own folder.
    4. Installing Tera Term Pro
    5. Open the Tera Term Pro client folder
    6. Double click on the setup icon.
    7. Click on "continue" at the language select box. "English" should be the default.
    8. Click "continue".
    9. Click "continue" to install into default directory c:\program files\TTERMPRO
    10. Click "ok" to finish.

    Installing the SSH Extension

    1. Open the folder containing the SSH add on.
    2. Select everything but the two text documents. This is done by holding the Ctrl button down while clicking on the items you want.
    3. Then go to the Edit tab and click cut.
    4. Then open up "My Computer" then click on your hard drive, then click on the folder named "Program Files" then click on the folder named "TTERMPRO".
    5. Next, go to the Edit tab and select paste.
    6. Look for this icon:

    7. Right click on this icon and select create shortcut.
    8. Next, right click on the shortcut icon and select rename. Rename this icon to:
    9. Tera Term Pro SSH

    10. Then highlight it and go to the Edit tab and select cut.
    11. Right click your start button and select Explore.
    12. Click on programs. Then click on Tera Term Pro folder and then go to the Edit tab and select paste.
    13. Now when you go to Start-> Programs -> Tera Term Pro -> there will be a selection for "Tera Term Pro SSH" .
    14. Be sure to choose "SSH" when attempting to access (Telnet is the default)

SSH Secure Shell 3.2.5 Program - Windows

PLEASE NOTE: If your password has already expired, you cannot use this program to connect to the server. In that case, you will need to either use the Web Password Changer for mail.rochester.edu users, or come to the ITS Center for a reset.

This program can be found at:

    www.infosec.rochester.edu/download

See "Downloading/Installation" and "Using the Application" below:

    5. Locate the file "SSHWinClient-3.2.5.exe" (the .exe may or may not be visible) and then double click on it; the installation program will begin.
    6. On the Welcome screen that appears click on NEXT.
    7. In the license agreement select NEXT.
    8. Install in the default location by clicking NEXT.
    9. Click NEXT to choose the default program folder.
    10. On the components screen click NEXT - at this point the program will install.
    11. Click FINISH once the installation is complete.
    12. You will now see two new icons on your desktop - one for the Secure Shell Client and one for the Secure File Transfer.

To run the program, do the following:

    1. Double click SSH Secure Shell Client and once the default screen appears hit the ENTER key.
    2. The "Connect to Remote Host" dialog box appears - enter the Host Name (usually mail.rochester.edu) and your User Name.

    4. Enter your password and click OK.
    5. When the next screen appears hit ENTER, then click the space bar until you are prompted to save or remove the contact information. Here you may choose either YES or NO as you prefer.
    6. You are now connected to mail.rochester.edu and ready to either change your password, or you may type "pine" and hit ENTER to begin using Pine.
