Virtual Private Networking

Getting Connected

In order to use VPN you must have an Internet Service Provider (ISP). AOL and Compuserve do not work with VPN! Please check out our isp-profile page for more information.

1. What You Need to Know

To access this service, faculty, staff, and students of the University including the Simon School will use their NetID and password to log in. More information about NetID, including how to initialize your NetID if you have not already done so, can be found at www.rochester.edu/its/netid/.

For information on how to enable VPN service for Medical Center faculty, staff, and administration, visit the following website: http://www.rochester.edu/its/vpn/medcenter

2. Setting up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connection

Click on the appropriate link below for your operating system for instructions on configuring your machine.

Windows Vista (32-bit)

Windows 2000, XP

Mac OS X (10.2.8 and higher, including 10.5)

3. Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connection

Once you have established a VPN connection as described in the setup instructions in Step 2 above, you are all set. VPN simply establishes a connection in such a way that you appear to be part of the University network. There is no additional software to run. Simply use your browser as you would normally and you will now be able to access the parts of the UR network that are restricted to faculty, staff, and students. Note that using VPN will make your connection run a little slower, so you should only use it for those times you need to get to the restricted library resources or to pop your email.
