Setup Tutorial for Macintosh using PPP (Modem)

Checklist

Before you begin, make sure that all of the following are true:

  • You meet the minimum system requirements.
  • You have recieved your account information from UTD.
  • You are subscribed to an internet service provider, and the associated hardware and software have been installed.
  • You can connect to the internet.

Installation

  1. Open the "Install TunnelBuilder Intl" application on the TunnelBuilder CD-ROM.
  2. When you reach the "Easy Install" screen, click Install. After you follow the onscreen prompts, your Macintosh will restart.

Configuration: NTS PPP Dialer

  1. Open the "NTS PPP Dialer" application on your hard drive. (the window should open when your computer finishes starting up.)
  2. Enter the following information in the window that appears:
    For...Enter...
    On the Account tab...
    Usernameyour dial-up user name (usually the same as your email address with your ISP)
    Passwordyour dial-up password
    Phone NumbersYou ISP's dial-up modem number
    After Modems ConnectStart PPP
    On the Modem tab...
    Modemthe model of your modem
    Serial Portthe port to which your modem is connected.
    On the DNS tab...
    Use DNS AddressesAs determined by PPP negotiations
    On the Misc. tab...
    Connect automaticallychecked
    Start virtual private networking after connectingchecked
  3. Still in the Misc. tab, click the VPN Settings button.
  4. In the window that appears, enter the following information:
    For...Enter...
    VPN ProtocolPPTP
    VPN Usernamethe user name that was issued to you by UTD
    VPN Passwordthe password that was issued to you by UTD
    VPN Server Address128.151.5.49
    Attempt to negotiate for AppleTalkchecked
    EncryptionMPPE
  5. Click the OK button.
  6. Close the "NTS PPP Dialer" application.

Configuration: TCP/IP

  1. Open the TCP/IP control panel. (Control Panels are accessible through the Apple menu.)
  2. Select Configurations... from the File menu.
  3. Make a note of the configuration that is currently selected. This is your existing configuration.
  4. Click Duplicate, and name the duplicate "PPP VPN".
  5. Click Make Active.
  6. Now, enter the following information:
    For...Enter...
    Connect viaNTS PPP TCP/IP
    ConfigureUsing PPP Server
    Name server addr. 128.151.224.6
    128.151.7.6
    128.151.219.6
  7. Close the TCP/IP window.

Connecting via VPN over PPP

  1. Make sure that the "PPP VPN" configuration is selected in the TCP/IP control panel. If you know that it already is, you can skip this step.
    1. Open the TCP/IP control panel.
    2. Select Configurations... from the File menu.
    3. Select "PPP VPN" from this list, and click Make Active.
    4. Close the TCP/IP control panel, confirming your changes.
  2. Open the "NTS PPP Dialer" application.
  3. Click the Connect button. After a short delay, the Connect button will change to read Disconnect, and a message will appear informing you that you are connected to the network.
  4. Use internet applications, like Internet Explorer or Eudora, to access University resources.
  5. When you are finished, click the Disconnect button in the "NTS PPP Dialer" application.

Connecting via PPP only

If you do not need to access University resources in this session, you can gain speed by swithcing back to your original configuration.

  1. Make sure that your original configuration is selected in the TCP/IP control panel. If you know that it already is, you can skip this step.
    1. Open the TCP/IP control panel.
    2. Select Configurations... from the File menu.
    3. Select your original configuration from this list, and click Make Active.
    4. Close the TCP/IP control panel, confirming your changes.
  2. Connect to your ISP as you normally would.
  3. Use internet applications, like Internet Explorer or Eudora, to access non-University internet resources.
