Fetch is a Macintosh program that uses FTP (file transfer protocol)
to transfer files from your computer onto a server, or vice versa. This
allows you to write files on your local computer in whatever editor you
like, and then place the files on the server when finished. Copying files
from your computer onto a remote server is called "uploading."
The disadvatage of using this method is that it sometimes easier and
quicker to edit the files on-line (using an editor like pico) than to make changes on your computer and transfer
them again. An advantage of editing files on your own computer is that
you can use HTML editors or whatever text editor you are most comfortable
with.
You can download Fetch now.
To use Fetch:
- Load Fetch and connect to www.rochester.edu. Type in your username
and password. For directory, enter the name of the directory where
your HTML files are stored. Select OK. (If you go to the Customize menu
and select Add Shortcut after you connect the first time,
you will only need to type your password at subsequent logins.)
- Under the Customize menu item, make sure that the option
to add .txt to text files is not selected. (You only
have to change this preference the first time you use Fetch.)
- Choose put folders and files from under remote on
the menu bar. Get the files you want off of your disk by hitting the add button.
Select done when finished.
- Next, you will need to tell Fetch how to upload the files. For text
files, choose "text". For other files, choose "raw data."
- When you are finished putting the files on the server, close
connection and then quit Fetch. (Newer versions do not have
the close connection option on the main window. You may
just quit the application.)
