To access your files on www.rochester.edu
(see Applying for an Account),
the first thing you do is to log in. If you are on a networked machine
(one with Netscape and Telnet, etc.) then you use a telnet application
to connect to the World Wide Web server. Before you can do this, however,
you must make sure you have registered the IP number of that machine
with the WWW staff at Town House (you probably wrote it on the application,
and are all set.)
Connecting from a Networked Computer
Open your telnet program and connect to www.rochester.edu.
A window will come up and you will see a login: prompt. Type
in your username as given on your account receipt. You will then be asked
for your password. After typing this correctly, you will be given a greeting
and then the prompt term = (vt100), where you can simply hit
return or enter. When you see a prompt that says 1 holodec% you
are in your account.
Depending on your telnet program, you may be able to save the settings
for this session so that next time you want to log in it is even easier.
To do this in NCSA Telnet, simply go to the File menu and choose "Save
Set." Give the set a name like "www" and save it wherever you will be
able to find it easily later. Next time you want to log in, just double
click on the icon that says "www" (or whatever name you gave it). This
will automatically open the window and you will see the login: prompt
without having to type in the server name or port number.
After Logging In
The directory you start in when you log in is not the directory where your
web pages are stored. The first thing you will probably want to do is change
into your home page directory (unless you are part of a shared account,
in which case you have been given specific directions.) Use the cd
dirname to change into your Web directory. Since everyone's files
are in a different place, everyone has a different directory name, which
you find out when you receive your account.
