| The WDEV upgrade will impact
how you publish Web pages on the central server: www.rochester.edu and
associated virtual servers using the upload address: www-ftp.rochester.edu.
It does NOT impact Web materials on courses.rochester.edu or WebCT or
any other servers.
Additional information will be added to this page as it is available.
The next step in increased Web server security will be taken on Monday
September 20 at the beginning of the day. Regular non-secure FTP will
be turned off on the development server upload address: www-ftp.rochester.edu.
This is the FTP access for www and all virtual servers on the central
server.
All uploads to the central servers will have to be done with Secure FTP
(SFTP) which has been running on the development server since the migration.
You can use begin using SFTP immediately. The most recent version of Dreamweaver
has this built in.
SFTP encrypts all communication and transfers of files thus better protecting
your Web publishing materials. It will also close off a significant vulnerability
of passwords as they will no longer be transmitted in the clear.
Another benefit of using SFTP is that we no longer have to tie your access
to a specific IP number. (IP numbers are the address of your computer
on the Internet) With strong passwords and encrypted transfers we will
now allow you to connect from any computer anywhere without using VPN.
This will also mean that those of you who are on dynamic IP subnets and
have had to request a fixed IP will no longer need to do so. This will
free up IP address which are in short supply in some areas of this campus.
Additionally, if you get a new computer or change locations on campus
you will not have to have us reset your IP number to regain access.
If you are using the current version of Dreamweaver MX 2004 all that will
change is your setting for using SFTP rather than FTP.
If you are using an older version of Dreamweaver or any other product
such as Fetch and WS-FTP LE, that uses FTP for placing the files on the
development server you will need to upgrade to a product that uses SFTP.
Please note that the part of older DW that will not work is ONLY the upload
function. All of the page editing functions will still work. You could
continue to use the editor and get a separate SFTP product to do the uploads.
Most of you will find it easier to upgrade the entire product. The ONLY
supported software will be Dreamweaver MX 2004. While we will assist you
in getting setup with other recognized SFTP products we will not support
them in an ongoing manner as we do not have the resources to do so.Another
product that can do SFTP is Macromedia's Contribute 2.0 and above.
All versions of Windows on a PC can use Secure Shell under the university
license. Download it at: http://www.infosec.rochester.edu/download/
(From off campus you need VPN). This product does both SSH and SFTP. This
is a free download
OS X (10.3 only) we suggest CyberDuck. Dowload at: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/cyberduck.html
This is a free download
Other Mac OS suggestions will be announced soon.
Dreamweaver MX 2004 can be purchased through University IT Computer Sales. There
is a free 30 day trial available from Macromedia Web site: http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/?promoid=home_prod_dw_082403
In ordering from Computer Sales ask for DREAMWEAVER MX 2004 EDUCATION
- MAC/PC priced at $96.31. This is a special price for the university.
Off campus the price can exceed $300.
This page will review various products that do SFTP. There are a number
of them on the market. Please be aware that we will not be supporting
them beyond initial setup and then only selected products. With our limited
staff and budget we cannot support all possible products. We urge you
to upgrade to DW MX 2004.
