Installing a Wireless Card in Mac OS9

Install or Upgrade the Apple AirPort Drivers

Machines that support the Apple AirPort card come with the Apple Airport Drivers pre-installed as part of the operating system.

If for some reason the drivers are not available on your machine, the drivers can be installed using the following instructions.

  1. Insert your AirPort wireless card as described in the user manual that came with your computer.
  2. Go to http://www.apple.com/software and search for Airport 1.3.1 drivers. Download these drivers.
  3. Double-click on AirPort 1.3.1.smi to mount the disk image file containing the AirPort 1.3.1 drivers. The AirPort window is displayed.
    Note:This file was downloaded to your desktop in the previous step.
  4. Double-click on the Apply SW Install icon to begin and follow the installation instructions displayed.
  5. Restart your computer.
    Note: After your computer reboots, the AirPort Setup Assistant may be launched automatically. Do not use the AirPort Setup Assistant.

Configuring Your Network Software with Apple AirPort Drivers

This section provides instructions for configuring your Macintosh for a wireless connection with the Apple AirPort Drivers. It is assumed that you are installing AirPort 1.3.1 on a Mac OS 9.1 or greater and running on a supported hardware platform.

Configure the AirPort Software

Follow these instructions to configure the AirPort Software.

  1. If the Airport Setup Assistant appears, choose Quit from the File menu. Quitting will leave your settings unchanged.
  2. Select AirPort from the Apple Menu to open the AirPort application.

    The AirPort application is opened.

  3. Click Settings to turn down or expose the configuration options.


  4. If Airport status is "OFF", click on Turn Airport On.


  5. In the Airport Network section, check to be sure that URNET is displayed under Choose network.
    • The Status section indicates that it is using the URNET network
    • The signal strength of your connection to the UR Wireless network is indicated with the Signal level bar.
    • The AirPort ID field in the AirPort section indicates the hardware address of the UR Wireless access point that your computer is currently connected to.

    Note: If any of these options are not correct, contact the ITS Center Help Desk at x52000.

  6. Close the AirPort Configuration application after verifying your settings.

Configure AppleTalk

Follow these instructions to configure AppleTalk.

  1. Select Apple Menu > Control Panels > AppleTalk Control Panel.
    The AppleTalk dialog box is displayed.
  2. Set the Connect via pop-up menu to AirPort.
    The Setup section indicates the Current zone. Initially the Current zone will display `<no zones available>'.
  3. Close AppleTalk and save the changes.

Configure TCP/IP

Follow these instructions to configure TCP/IP.

  1. Select Apple Menu > Control Panels > TCP/IP.
    <Note: The control panel should be in Basic mode. If it isn't, select Edit Menu > User Mode > Basic .
  2. Set the Connect via pop-up menu to AirPort.
  3. Set the Configure pop-up menu to Using DHCP Server.
  4. Leave the DHCP Client ID field blank.
  5. Close the TCP/IP control panel.
    A dialog box is displayed asking if you want to save your changes.
  6. Save your changes.

Your network software is now configured. If you cannot establish a connection to the network, verify that you have completed the steps properly and then call the ITS Center Help Desk at x52000 for further assistance.
