Setup VPN for Windows XP

Configuration

  1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
  2. If your Control Panel is set to Category View:
    1. Click on Network and Internet Connections.
    2. Click Create a connection to the network at my workplace.
    If your Control Panel is set to Classic View:
    1. Click on Network Connections.
    2. From the Network Tasks sidebar, click Create a new connection.
    3. Click Next.
    4. Select Connect to the network at my workplace and click Next.
  3. Select Virtual Private Network connection and click Next.
  4. In the Company Name box, type UR WIRELESS. Click Next.
  5. Select Do not dial the inital connection and click Next.
  6. In the Host name or IP address box, type 172.19.1.250. Click Next.
  7. If you wish, check Add a shortcut to this connection to the desktop. Click Finish.

After clicking Finish, you will be presented with the connection dialog. Before connecting, you must modify some security settings:

  1. From the connection dialog, click Properties.
  2. Select the Security tab.
  3. Select Advanced and click Settings.
  4. Check Allow older MS-CHAP version for Windows 95 servers and click OK.
  5. Click OK.

Connecting via VPN

  1. Once you are connected to the internet, Open the VPN connection in the Network and Connections control panel. If you chose to place a shortcut on the desktop, you may use the shortcut instead.
  2. Enter your NETID and password.
  3. Click Connect.
  4. You will see a status window as you are connected to VPN.
  5. When the connection completes, the window will be minimized to an icon in the system tray (on the right side of the Windows taskbar).
  6. Use internet applications, like Internet Explorer or Eudora, to access University resources.
  7. When you are finished, right-click the VPN connection icon (in the system tray) and click Disconnect, or disconnect from your ISP.
