Statement on the Fatal Shootings at an LGTBQ+ Nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado

A collage of headshots of LGBTQ faculty and staff.

In honor of National Coming Out Day, the University's LGBTQ Advocacy Committee shares the result of its "UR Out" photo project, which invited LGBTQ employees to participate by sharing a photo. The project is a visible representation that helps to foster a sense of community while also letting LGBTQ students, coworkers, and patients know that they are welcome here at the University.

Of those pictured, approximately 36% are from The University of Rochester Medical Center; 29% are from the College of Arts, Sciences & Engineering; 8% are from the School of Medicine and Dentistry, 7% are from Eastman School of Music, 6% are in Health Service/University Counseling Center with another 6% from Central Administration, and 5% in our Libraries. We also had participation from folks in University IT, School of Nursing, Simon School of Business, Warner School of Education, Environmental Health and Safety, Bailey Road Microbiology, Advancement/Alumni Relations, Human Resources, and the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. Most of our participating LGBTQ employees have been with the University for 0-5 years (59%) followed by 6-10 years (17%). For the remaining, 7% of those pictured have worked with us for 26+ years while 6% worked here 21-25 years and another 6% have been with us 16-20 years, and the final 5% have been part of the team here 11-15 years.

There are also a wide variety of identities represented. When we asked folks about their identities (with the opportunity to check as many options as represented us – so the number adds up to more than 100%) here is what we learned: about 40% are queer and another 40% are gay, 21% are lesbian, 17% are bisexual and another 17% are pansexual, 12% are non-binary, 10% are trans, and 7% are asexual. We also have folks who are trans-masc, trans-fem, aromantic, demisexual, and genderqueer. We love to see what a beautiful rainbow of colleagues we have here at the University of Rochester!
