Mission Statement: The Charles Drew Pre-Health Professions Society is an organization that volunteers its services for the purpose of heightening the awareness and understanding of issues in health, medicine, and science, in general as they relate to all members of the community. Through the various interactions and activities that we offer, students can begin to gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities to interact appropriately within multicultural and diverse environments, required for competency within the medical field.
Meetings, Activities & Goals: COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES: Need experience in finding out what you want to do? Community service is a great chance to find out what motivates you to become a person in the health professions. Each month we offer activities that are mainly general in basis, as well as more long-term commitment arrangements, like the Saturday Mentoring Program. We also co-sponsor events with the Community Service Network. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Have you ever wondered what it is really like to be in the health career you are interested in? What is it like to be a cardiologist, a nurse, or a nutritionist? Charles Drew Pre-Health Professions Society offers a shadowing program with a list of medical professionals to choose from, where you can learn what it really takes to be in a health career. Information on health related internships and scholarships is available via emails and through links on this website's Resources section. Guest speakers, like admissions officers and health care professionals of all types, give seminars offering exposure to key issues in medicine, their professions, and general information on how to establish careers in various health fields. OTHER SERVICES: Reminders about MCAT and DAT deadlines, information sessions, links to health related programs and services for health related careers are available via links on the website. We also offer a course titled CAS 302- Intro to Problem-Based Learning in Medicine. In this course, which follows the structure that is rapidly becoming the paradigm for medical school education, students are introduced to clinical problems via PBL cases, which are derived from actual clinical cases. Students work with their peers to determine the significance of the data presented by the case and then try to make a decision on the cause of the problem, how to solve or manage it...much the way physicians make diagnoses and plan treatment regimens. The cases offered to students are chosen such that the promote creative thinking and teamwork...great skills that are essential for any future health professional. ANNUAL CONFERENCE: -Keynote speakers addressing issues in the medical field -one-on-one mock interviews with actual medical school personnel -information on MCAT -opportunities to speak with a medical school admissions board member -medical student and health career panelists Want to see something at the conference that isn't listed here?
