Mission Statement: The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) at the University of Rochester was established in the Spring of 1999 with five founding chapters. These chapters are undergraduate chapters of two Latina-based sororities, two Latino-based fraternities, one Asian-interest fraternity. The origins of Latino-oriented fraternities dates back to the late 1920’s with one of the first fraternities that still exists today being founded in 1931. The first Latina-oriented sorority was founded in 1975. Since then these chapters that have a focus on the Latino culture have become increasingly dominant organizations on their respective campuses. Today there are over 60 Latino fraternities and sororities across the United States and internationally. Asian-interest chapters in the East Coast are experiencing a recent rise in their growth. The West Coast saw the first Asian-interest organizations, also back in the early 1900s, however, in the past 10 years we see a great growth of these chapters across the United States. Both Latino and Asian interest chapters were formed due to a need that was felt by their members in securing a voice on their campuses; a medium in which they would ensure their issues would be raised and given attention as the rest of the student community on campus. Although these chapters have a specific cultural focus, they do not discriminate. They welcome all those that are interested in their respective organizations. Currently, the MGC now includes a new Asian-interest fraternity, as well as, members of National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations as a result of the merger of the local NPHC council and MGC in the Spring of 2001. On this campus, the MGC is comprised of the following chapters: **Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Howard University 1908**Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
