MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

Merit-based scholarship recipients demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, talent, leadership, and potential. While there is no separate application for merit scholarships, earlier deadlines and more detailed admissions application materials are required. (Specific requirements can be found at www.rochester.edu/admissions).

The strength of the candidates who apply to the University often makes our applicants excellent candidates for outside scholarships. Be sure to look to family employers and local foundations, clubs, and community agencies for scholarship opportunities, as well as taking advantage of resources your guidance office, local library, and the internet may offer. Our website includes links to multiple resources.

FINANCING

In addition to the merit-based and need-based programs, many families are also interested in financing a portion of the cost of education through long-term financing options. Common programs include:

Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan
The Direct Loan program also offers an unsubsidized version for students whose financial need is met through other resources. The interest on this low interest educational loan accrues while the student is in school.
Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)
The PLUS loan program allows parents to borrow up to the cost of education minus any other financial aid offered.
Alternative Loan Options
We have applications for loans offered by private lending institutions (e.g., Nellie Mae, Citibank). Approval for these loans is based on the borrower's credit history. Many students will require a cosigner in order to be approved.
