Memo from Committee Co-Chair Nicholas P. Bigelow to the University Community

Dec. 19, 2003

Dear Colleagues,

As part of the decennial reaccreditation of the University of Rochester, we have been carrying out a university-wide Self-Study. I am writing to you to make you aware of our activities and to seek your input into this important process.

To oversee the reaccreditation process, a University Committee was formed that is co-chaired by myself and Dean William Scott Green. This Committee was appointed by President Jackson and Provost Phelps and includes representatives from all schools and colleges and from the many arms of the University. Because our varied curricula recently have been reviewed and assessed, or are about to be, the Committee directed the major part of the Self-Study to the central theory and practice of the University's structure and administration: the consequences of decentralization.

We are now at the important stage of writing a report on our findings. The report has as its centerpiece a series of recommendations that we believe will help affect the direction of the University and define the overall relationship of its structure to our academic enterprise. We hope that you can provide us with as much input as possible over the next weeks. It is our hope to be able to incorporate your input as soon as possible and we seek input from the University community by 16 January 2004.

Below we provide a URL for a web site where the current working version of our report can be viewed.

Please note that the Self-Study is intended to be an ongoing process with discussion and impact that will reach beyond the decennial accreditation review. Some of your discussion is expected to have immediate impact on the Study, while other comments will naturally define the future of the Self-Study process.

The www site URL is http://www.rochester.edu/middlestates. It will be most efficient if all comments could be sent via e-mail to selfstudy@rochester.edu.

We thank you for your time, interest and attention to this important process.

Best Regards,

Nicholas P. Bigelow
On behalf of the Self-Study Steering Committee
