University of Rochester Alumni Cited in 'Best' Lists

The calendar year may be winding down, but University of Rochester alumni keep shining brightly. Three University graduates were cited in national news magazines' end-of-the-year issues for professional accomplishments.

People magazine's "The 25 Most Intriguing People 2000" (Dec. 25 issue) included Renee Fleming '83, Grammy-winning opera singer, named along with Hillary Clinton and Tiger Woods. Fleming earned a master of music degree from the Eastman School of Music. "Lots of singers have been called divas," said People, "but she's the real thing."

Time magazine's "The Best of 2000" (Dec. 18 issue) singled out:

Maria Schneider '88, big band composer-arranger-conductor, cited for her album Allegresse: "Listen to her sweepingly ambitious compositions, and hear the next wave of jazz taking shape before your ears." She received her master of music degree from the Eastman School.

Myles Brand '67, president of Indiana University, cited for ending famed basketball coach Bobby Knight's career after determining that "the bully" (as Time dubbed him) had failed to follow a strict policy governing his behavior on and off the court. Brand has a doctorate in philosophy from the University.
