U of R Student Wins Prestigious Churchill Scholarship

Bradley Allen, a University of Rochester senior from Miami, FL, majoring in mathematics and optics, has been named a Churchill Scholar for the 1996-97 academic year. He will earn a master's degree in physics at Cambridge University's Churchill College.

Only ten graduating seniors in the U.S. are awarded a Churchill Scholarship in any one year. Students are selected for their outstanding achievement in academic work, high scores on the Graduate Record Examination, capacity for original, creative work, and their character, adaptability, and demonstrated concern for the critical problems of society.

The scholarship will cover Allen's travel expenses, tuition, and living expenses for the year. The scholarship is valued at approximately $23,000.

Churchill College was founded in 1959 to provide a new center of excellence at Cambridge University for education in science and technology. Its goal was to attract the best minds available, and in Winston Churchill's own words, "to offer an education as high as any that exists to meet the challenge of the new age of technology." The College is Britain's national memorial to him.

The scholarship program was established to invite outstanding American students to do graduate work in engineering, mathematics, and science at Churchill College.

During the 1980s, five University of Rochester students won Churchill scholarships. The last Churchill scholarship awarded before this year's went to Leonard Mueller in 1988.
