EVENT: Reading by Author Mary Cappello

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: Noon, Tuesday, Oct. 3, Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester River Campus

ADMISSION: Free and open to the public

In a continuation of the series "Fall Readings by Old Friends: Rochester Writers and the Writing Life" at the University of Rochester, former English department faculty member Mary Cappello will be giving a reading from her book, Night Bloom: A Memoir. The series is a special offering of the 39th season of the Hyam Plutzik Memorial Poetry Series and The Donald R. Clark Enrichment Program in the Humanities.

Cappello is currently an associate professor of English at the University of Rhode Island, where she teaches courses in creative writing, gender studies, and American literature.

Cappello's reading will be held at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library on the River Campus. Refreshments will be provided.

In her book, Night Bloom: A Memoir, Cappello explores growing up as a third generation Italian-American. She writes about the poverty and street violence that she faced in a working class suburb of Philadelphia, as well as the difficulties presented by her emerging lesbian sexuality.

In addition to Cappello, the series will also feature Galway Kinnell, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and noted alumnus. Kinnell received his master's degree from the University and will be reading from his own works at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29, in the Great Hall, 2nd floor, in Rush Rhees Library.
