University Announces New $5,000 "Meliora Grant"
A University of Rochester Meliora Grant will give a $5,000 annual grant toward tuition to New York State high school students who enroll as freshmen in the fall of 1995.
The grant program -- named after the University's motto "Meliora," meaning "always better" -- was announced Saturday, Oct. 22, by President Thomas H. Jackson during his inaugural address.
"We view this as an investment in New York State students," Jackson said. "We think that the best students should be encouraged to consider one of the country's leading private institutions in their home state."
The grant will go to all new freshmen residing in the state who enroll in the University's undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences, engineering, and nursing. Those who are eligible for need-based financial assistance will receive additional assistance as their family circumstances dictate.
The University of Rochester, founded in 1850, has 5,000 full-time undergraduates and 2,700 full-time graduate students. Its current tuition is $17,840. The University was ranked third among national universities on U.S. News's "best values" ranking earlier this month.
