EVENT: A reading and a performance by dancer and teacher Deborah Hay

Deborah Hay, a nationally renowned dancer and choreographer, will present two programs at the University of Rochester this month based on her literary and performance work.

Hay will read from her book My Body, The Buddhist at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19. She will also perform her work "Beauty," followed by an adaptation of the work by graduate student of dance Kathryn TeBordo, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20. Both events will be held in the dance studio in Spurrier Gym on the River Campus.

A resident of Austin, Texas, since 1976, Hay tours as a solo performer and teacher. In her choreography, Hay experiments with the nature of experience, perception, and attention in dance. She has received many awards, including numerous fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Award, a McKnight Award, and a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Fellowship.

Hay is the author of three books, including Lamb at the Altar: the Story of Dance and My Body, The Buddhist. She was also selected by the Austin Critics Table in 2002 as part of the first group of artists to be inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame.

TeBordo, a native of Atlanta, Ga., and graduate of Bard College, is currently working on her master's thesis discussing the cultural value of solo performance at SUNY College at Brockport. Her work can also be seen this season at the Image/Movement/Sound Festival in Rochester and the National Women's Studies Association conference in New Orleans.
