EVENT: Program Commemorates Missionaries Martyred in El Salvador
In December 1980, three Catholic nuns and a lay missionary from the United States were abducted, raped, and murdered in El Salvador. Five Salvadoran National Guardsmen were eventually convicted of the brutal crime, though the United Nations report of the Commission on the Truth for El Salvador concluded that the abductions were planned in advance and the guardsmen acted on orders from higher levels.
“Certain Women,” a program of narrative, song, and prayer, will commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the women’s deaths at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Interfaith Chapel on the University of Rochester’s River Campus. The evening includes a presentation by author/storyteller Gloria Ulterino, a 1962 graduate of the University of Rochester, and the praying of the Stations of the Cross using the words of the martyred missionaries.
