Psychologist Harry Reis Appointed Editor of APS Journal
Harry T. Reis, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, has been chosen editor-elect of an international journal devoted to psychological science. His leadership of Current Directions in Psychological Science will stretch the appeal of the journal to all specialties in psychology.
Current Directions is unique among psychological journals in emphasizing the dissemination of cutting-edge research findings from specialized areas to a wide audience, including researchers in other disciplines and policy makers.
“One of the things I hope will happen is cross-fertilization and growth across areas,” says Reis. “We want to convey the breath of the field because no one theory, no one approach has a monopoly on the truth.”
Current Directions is one of two flagship journals of the American Psychological Society, the world’s leading organization dedicated solely to psychological science. The bimonthly publication targets new and significant research in all major fields of psychology, and is considered an invaluable resource for students and scholars alike.
Reis has started commissioning articles for the publication’s scholarly reviews on emerging trends, controversies, and issues of enduring importance to the science of psychology. He has converted the work of a traditional editorial board to a more active advisory board intent on scouting new topics and articles for Current Directions.
Reis is well known for his studies of everyday social interaction using event-sampling techniques. He is author or co-author of more than 100 publications, and has been awarded several federally funded research grants. He earned his doctorate in psychology from New York University.
From 2000 to 2002, Reis was president of the International Society for the Study of Personal Relationships. He also has been the executive officer of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, an international organization headquartered in Rochester with more than 4,000 members, and a member of the American Psychological Association’s Board of Scientific Affairs. From 1985 to 1990, Reis was editor of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
