EVENT: Hopeman Memorial Carillon Summer Recital Series, featuring Elizabeth Egbert Berghout of the University of Kansas

Elizabeth Egbert Berghout, assistant professor of carillon and organ and university carillonneur at the University of Kansas, will present the second concert in the Hopeman Memorial Carillon Summer Recital series at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 15, on the Eastman Quadrangle at the University of Rochester’s River Campus.

At Kansas, Berghout performs weekly concerts and teaches on the university’s carillon, a musical instrument of bells controlled by a keyboard. In a dual career as a concert organist, she presents organ recitals and is also featured guest organist at the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she has performed in the daily recital series since 1995.

Berghout received a bachelor of music degree in organ performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University and her master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees from the University of Kansas.

The University of Rochester’s Hopeman Memorial Carillon is located in the landmark tower of Rush Rhees Library. Concertgoers should bring blankets, lawn chairs, picnic baskets, and even a book to read and can sit anywhere on the Eastman Quadrangle in front of the library to enjoy the music.

Berghout’s program includes classical and popular standards as well as works composed for the carillon, including Bach’s “Prelude from Suite I for Unaccompanied Cello,” arrangements of three African-American spirituals, and Robert Moore’s “Toccata for 42 Bells.”

The Hopeman Memorial Carillon Summer Recital Series is sponsored by the Department of Music. The remaining concerts include Marcel Siebers, a composer and carillonneur from Germany, on July 22; and Stephen Schreiber, organist and choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in Ambler, Pa., on July 29.
