EVENT: Hopeman Memorial Carillon Summer Recital Series, featuring Stephen Schreiber, organist and choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church, Ambler, Pa.

The final concert in this year’s Hopeman Memorial Carillon Summer Recital Series will feature Stephen Schreiber at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 29, on the Eastman Quadrangle on the University of Rochester’s River Campus.

Schreiber is a Carillonneur Member in the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, a professional membership based on an applicant’s examination and recital. He has performed concerts throughout New England and the East Coast.

The organist and choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in Ambler, Pa., Schreiber also presents harpsichord recitals and is an accompanist to various choral organizations. He earned a master of music degree from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J., where he studied organ and church music, and has been a featured recitalist for the American Guild of Organists.

Schreiber’s program at the University will feature works composed specifically for the carillon as well as arrangements of French, Irish, and Scottish folk songs, music from the movies, sacred music, and popular American standards such as George M. Cohan’s “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy.”

The University of Rochester’s Hopeman Memorial Carillon, an instrument of bells connected to a keyboard, is located in the landmark tower of Rush Rhees Library. It is one of only six carillons in New York State and contains 50 bells that were imported from Holland. Its total weight is 6,668 pounds.

Concertgoers should bring blankets, lawn chairs, picnic baskets, and even a book to read and can sit anywhere on the Eastman Quadrangle in front of the library to enjoy the music.
