EVENT: Lecture by Mary Jane Kehily

Mary Jane Kehily, visiting scholar at the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development and on the faculty of education and language studies at The Open University in England, will discuss “Sexuality, Gender, and Schooling: Shifting Agendas in Social Learning” at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, in room 540 of Lattimore Hall on the University of Rochester’s River Campus. The event is sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies.

The presentation will offer an account of how young people acquire sexual knowledge and how they enact versions of their own gender. Kehily will discuss her work and analysis of the ways in which young people’s constructions of gender and sexuality are formed inside and outside of the school curriculum, through engagements with various forms of popular culture—such as teen magazines and television programs, and through same-sex friendship groups.

Kehily is the author of Sexuality, Gender, and Schooling (Routledge, 2002), and editor of An Introduction to Childhood Studies (Open University/McGraw-Hill, 2004). Following the presentation, she will be available to meet with students and faculty to discuss her research on the cultural worlds of young people, as well as feminist, ethnographic, and other work.
