Note: Parking is available on University lots after 7 p.m. weeknights and all weekend.
Joanna Heatwole, an instructor in the Studio Arts Program at the University of Rochester, will be exhibiting her work titled Body of Knowledge from Wednesday, Oct. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 6, in the Hartnett Gallery in Wilson Commons on the University of Rochester’s River Campus.
The exhibit features metal structures, set up in rows, housing photographs. These metal structures seemingly resemble desks. The photographs suggest students’ feelings of boredom, repetition, and isolation associated with educational institutions, particularly in the classroom. A film featuring educational videos from the past 50 years combined with Heatwole’s own edited footage is projected across from the photographs, showing where one might expect a blackboard.
Heatwole is finishing her master of fine arts degree at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester. She holds a double bachelor’s degree in journalism and English from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va. Her recent solo exhibitions include Mother’s Daughters: Mennonite Women Today and The Listening Circle.
