Humorist and writing talent Roy Blount, Jr., will share stories in his engaging and witty style as the next Neilly Series speaker at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in Hoyt Hall on the University of Rochester’s River Campus. After years as a columnist, sportswriter, and editor, he began creating poetry, screenplays, and has written 19 books, including a Penguin biography Robert E. Lee (2003) and I Am Puppy, Hear Me Yap: The Ages of Dog (2000).
Blount (pronounced blunt) contributes to many magazines, and is a regular guest on National Public Radio’s Wait, Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me!, the weekly quiz show of news, opinions, and clever comebacks. His lecture is free and open to the public.
Three books in the works will add to Blount’s long list of creative enterprises in almost every medium from a screenplay called Larger Than Life starring Bill Murray, to the lyrics of a song in the film Michael with John Travolta, and an HBO fairy tale, The Frog Princess.
Blount will be introduced by Myra Gelband, former senior editor of Sports Illustrated and a member of the University Board of Trustees. Blount was a staff writer and editor there from 1968 to 1975.
