EVENT: Discussion on the magnetic workings of the Sun by astrophysicist John H. Thomas of the University of Rochester

The Sun rather than snow will be the focus of a Tea Talks conversation with University of Rochester astrophysicist John H. Thomas at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library at the University of Rochester’s River Campus. Thomas, professor of mechanical and aerospace sciences and of astronomy, will describe the magnetic workings of the Sun and other stars. The event is free and open to the public.

Last fall, Thomas conducted research as a senior visiting fellow at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge, England. Beyond his theoretical research interests, Thomas also conducts telescopic observations of dynamical phenomena in the solar atmosphere. In his research, he collaborates with colleagues in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Rochester; the High Altitude Observatory in Boulder, Colo.; the University of Cambridge in England; and LAEFF in Madrid, among other institutions.

Tea Talks is a continuing series of events sponsored by River Campus Libraries. The final program this spring will welcome Kenneth Cauthen, the John Price Crozer Griffith Professor Emeritus of Theology at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, on March 20. The talks are presented on selected Sundays in a casual atmosphere with tea and biscuits.
