Rochester photographer Gabriela Ponce has juxtaposed two themes in a showing of her recent work now on display through Friday, July 22, in the Gallery at the Art & Music Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus. The exhibit, "Gabriela Ponce: Photographs 2003-05," is free and open to the public.

All of Ponce's color photographs capture men and women in private but stressful moments. In one group, female models look bored, depressed, and tired as they sit in a photographer's studio. Her other group of photographs shows people alone in the bathroom, "a setting both innocuous, yet full of social expectations and implications," Ponce says. To her, "both bodies of work exploit social expectations, and give way to a darker, more real 'truth.' "

Born in Quito, Ecuador, Ponce received her bachelor of fine arts degree in photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. She is a member of the staff of the Visual Resources Collection in Rush Rhees Library, also home to the Gallery at the Art & Music Library.

An opening reception with the artist will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, in the gallery, which is located on the ground floor. Exhibit hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday (closed July 4), Thursday, and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. For more information, contact (585) 275-4476.
