EVENT: Race Commemorates Anthony's Commitment to Women's Education

The Susan B. Anthony Legacy Race, which recreates Susan B. Anthony's fight to win women admission to the University of Rochester, returns to the Rochester streets and the River Campus on Sunday, Sept. 25, this year.

Open to men and women, the 5K walk/run is sponsored by the University's Anthony Center for Women's Leadership and The Susan B. Anthony House. Participants can get details and register online at http://www.rochester.edu/SBA/. Early bird registration through Sept. 15 is $15; registration Sept. 16 through 24 is $18; registration on race day is $20. Registration for students is $12.

The race begins at 10 a.m. at The Susan B. Anthony House at 17 Madison St. and ends near the Interfaith Chapel on River Campus. Parking will be available on the River Campus, and buses will transport walkers and runners from the registration site behind Rush Rhees Library to the Anthony House for the race start.

The top prize of $250 will be awarded to the first man and to the first woman to cross the finish line. There will also be awards for the top men and women by age groups, the fastest team of four runners, and the participant who collects the most pledges. Reflecting Anthony’s role as a teacher and mentor to young women, including her own relatives, special prizes are earmarked for teams featuring the fastest teacher/student, coach/athlete, and aunt/niece.

Volunteers are needed and anyone interested in working behind-the-scenes for the race can contact the Center at (585) 275-8799 or acwl@mail.rochester.edu.

The Anthony Legacy Race was inspired by Susan B. Anthony’s “deadline dash” to ensure women’s admission to the University of Rochester. Anthony raised the final monies needed for the co-education campaign fund and rushed to present the funds to the trustees on Sept. 8, 1900, in time for women to enroll in classes that fall.

Proceeds from the race benefit ongoing educational programs at the Anthony Center for Women’s Leadership and The Susan B. Anthony House.
