EVENT: Student Group Marks Environmental Justice Week

Grassroots, a student environmental action and awareness group at the University of Rochester, will celebrate "Environmental Justice Week" beginning Nov. 7 with a focus on issues relating to water.

The week starts with a debate on water privatization at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, in 1-101 Dewey Hall on the River Campus. Participants include Robert Foster, Mercer Brugler Distinguished Teaching Professor and professor of anthropology; Steven Lansburg, adjunct associate professor of economics; Richard Metzger, chief engineer and director of production and transmission for the Monroe County Water Authority; and former City newspaper reporter Jack Spula.

A free fish fry will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, in the Hirst Lounge in Wilson Commons. On Wednesday, Nov. 9, the group will sponsor a sale of Ecuadorian jewelry as well as providing information on the Amazon basin drought and Ecuadorian civil rights from noon to 4 p.m. in the Hirst Lounge. On Thursday, Nov. 10, the progressive film series titled, "Drowned Out," sponsored by Students for Social Justice, will be screened starting at 7 p.m. in Lander Auditorium in Hutchison Hall. The week's events conclude on Friday, Nov. 11, when the group will present facts about factory farms and their run-off in water from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Hirst Lounge.
