Public Invited to Audition for Ensembles on River Campus

Several ensembles in the Department of Music in the University of Rochester's College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering have scheduled auditions. Memberships in these groups are open to experienced musicians in the greater Rochester community as well to University students.

The ensembles rehearse regularly and present concerts both on the River Campus and in the community. The musical groups and their scheduled audition times on the River Campus include:

  • University of Rochester Wind Symphony: 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, and 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, in Strong Auditorium. The ensemble performs standard and contemporary wind music as well as transcriptions from other genres. Conductor is William Tiberio, who teaches at Fairport High School and at Eastman Community Music School.

  • University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6, in Strong Auditorium. The 100-member orchestra is conducted by David Harman, professor of music and director of orchestral activities, and presents four concerts each year. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in Strong Auditorium.

  • Men's and Women's Choruses: No formal audition required; first rehearsal is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, in Lander Auditorium in Hutchison Hall. No prepared vocal piece is necessary; singers should come ready to work through vocal exercises with director L. Brett Scott. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings.

  • University of Rochester Gospel Choir: No formal audition required; first rehearsal is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the Gowen Room in Wilson Commons. The Gospel Choir, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, has been directed since its inception by Rev. Alvin Parris III.
