EVENT: Science writer Alan Burdick travels the world to find threatened species
TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in the Hawkins-Carlson Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus
ADMISSION: Free and open to the public
Alan Burdick is the author of Out of Eden: An Odyssey of Ecological Invasion, which won the 2005 Overseas Press Club award for best reporting on international environmental issues. He is senior editor of Discover magazine and has won other awards for his science and nature writing. For Out of Eden, he traveled around the world to learn how the increasing movement of species globally threatens the many small pockets of biological diversity. He describes the book as "a search both for scientific answers and for ecological identity."
His talk is the first of the Neilly Series for 2006-07, which is supported by the Andrew H. Neilly and Janet Dayton Neilly Endowment, and the University of Rochester River Campus Libraries. All Neilly lectures are free, open to the pubic, and located on the River Campus of the University. Burdick's talked is timed to coincide with Meliora Weekend, the annual celebration for alumni, parents, students, and the public on the River Campus.
