EVENT: Concert by the University of Rochester Percussion Ensemble

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 25, in Strong Auditorium on the University's River Campus

ADMISSION: Free and open to the public

The University of Rochester Percussion Ensemble is a newly formed, eight-member group of undergraduates that performs a wide range of traditional and contemporary pieces. The group is currently under the direction of Margaret Billin, a graduate student in music education in the University's Eastman School of Music.

The concert will feature works by Mitchell Peters, Alan Abel, and Steve Reich, which make use of traditional instruments such as marimba, xylophone, and snare drum. The concert will also include several contemporary pieces composed by ensemble members. In these modern "performance art" pieces, the ensemble will make use of ordinary household objects, such as plastic cups and garbage bags, and will also use body percussion and other techniques to create unique sounds.
