EVENT: Lecture on Soviet and Russian environmental activism
TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in the Hawkins-Carlson Room in Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus
ADMISSION: Free and open to the public
Douglas R. Weiner, professor of history at the University of Arizona, will discuss "Soviet and Russian Environmental Activism: Implications for the Study of Science, Soviet Society, and the Soviet Regime."
Weiner is a former president of the American Society for Environmental History and the author of three books: Shades of Green: Environmental Activism around the Globe (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc., 2006), A Little Corner of Freedom: Russian Nature Protection from Stalin to Gorbachev (University of California Press, 1999), and Models of Nature: Ecology, Conservation, and Cultural Revolution in Soviet Russia (Indiana University Press, 1988). He also has written numerous articles and reviews on global environmental history, history of Russian and the Soviet Union, and the early history of the Soviet secret police.
Weiner's talk is part of the Verne Moore Lectures series sponsored by the University's Department of History and funded by a gift from University alumnus Verne Moore, Class of 1950.
