EVENT: Scholar Richard Pells discusses America's impact on global culture

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in the Hawkins-Carlson Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus

ADMISSION: Free and open to the public

Pells, professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin, will give a talk on "From Modernism to the Movies: The Globalization of American Culture in the 20th Century."

A specialist in 20th century American cultural and intellectual history, Pells researches the global impact of American culture and the ways that foreign cultures have affected the United States. His books include Radical Visions and American Dreams: Culture and Social Thought in the Depression Years; The Liberal Mind in a Conservative Age: American Intellectuals in the 1940s and 1950s; and Not Like Us: How Europeans Have Loved, Hated, and Transformed American Culture Since World War II. Pells is currently at work on a book, From Modernism to the Movies: The Globalization of American Culture in the 20th Century, to be published by Yale University Press.

Pells's talk is part of the Verne Moore Lectures series sponsored by the University's Department of History and funded by a gift from University alumnus Verne Moore, Class of 1950. The program is sponsored with The Humanities Project, an initiative at the University of Rochester to emphasize the influence and contributions of the humanities to academic and civic life.
