EVENT: Lecture by Hans Davidsson and Joel Speerstra on "The Organ: Its History, Culture, and Technology"

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in Lander Auditorium of Hutchison Hall on the University of Rochester's River Campus

ADMISSION: Free and open to the public

This lecture is the first in a series of events, "The Organ in Society: Culture and Technology," that aims to illustrate the connection between the study of music, historic cultures, and the physics of pipe organ construction. The series, co-sponsored by the Department of History and the College Music Department, is based on the activities of the Eastman Rochester Organ Initiative (EROI).

Hans Davidsson received his soloist diploma in 1985 from the Conservatory of Goteborg in Sweden. He has been touring in England, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States since 1974. He is currently a professor of organ at the Eastman School of Music and is the project director of the Eastman-Rochester Organ Initiative.

Joel Speerstra is the research director at the Goteborg Organ Art Center (GOArt) at Goteberg University in Sweden. He is currently the research coordinator of the Rochester organ installation.

This talk is part of the Humanities Project, an initiative by the University of Rochester emphasizing the influence and contributions of the humanities to academic and civil life.
