EVENT: 'Mount Trashmore': A Smelly Exercise in Sustainability

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 1, in Wilson Quadrangle on the University of Rochester's River Campus

ADMISSION: Free

For one day, the picturesque Wilson Quadrangle will become a dumping ground for soggy coffee cups, putrid plastic containers, and rotting rubbish in an effort to raise public awareness about waste reduction.

Students from the campus environmental organization Grassroots will pile scores of trash bags collected from the nearby Wilson Commons dining hall throughout the day on the quad lawn, creating a 'Mount Trashmore' eyesore to illustrate the amount of garbage generated in a single day and how much more could be recycled.

"We want to provide a visual reminder of the amount of waste that our campus produces to emphasize the importance of recycling and cause students to give more attention to environmental issues," said organizer Andrew Spink '09.
