CEO's New Book on the Future of American Life, Consumerism, and Politics
"All hail Zogby, the maverick predictor who beat us all," proclaimed the Washington Post in November 1996 after John Zogby called that presidential election with pinpoint accuracy.
Now the famed interpreter of public opinion will discuss what is likely to decide the Pennsylvania Democratic primary as well as the ultimate outcome of the 2008 presidential election at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the Welles-Brown Room of the University of Rochester's Rush Rhees Library.
Praised by the New York Post as the "pace setter in the polling business," the CEO and president of Zogby International will discuss the 2008 campaign based on his firm's analysis of demography, political ideology, and party identity. He will also talk about his upcoming book, The Way We'll Be: The Zogby Report on the Transformation of the American Dream (Random House), which analyzes American consumer behavior and demographic changes that may alter the future of American life and politics.
Zogby International, located in Utica, NY, has been tracking, testing and measuring hypotheses and principles on polling and public opinion research since 1984 in North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. The company works with panels of psychologists, sociologists, computer specialists, linguists, political scientists, economists, and mathematicians.
As Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton battle it out on April 22, Zogby will also be giving insights about America's views at a 12:30 p.m. luncheon sponsored by the Rochester Rotary Club at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Paul Burgett, the University of Rochester's vice president and general secretary, will introduce Zogby at the event. For information, contact Heather Rossi in the Rotary Office at 546-7435 x204.
In the 2000 elections, daily national tracking polls conducted by Zogby International foretold a tightening of the race for president while many other polling firms projected an easy victory for Gov. George W. Bush. Zogby International was the first to observe the gap closing significantly between Bush and Vice-President Al Gore in the waning hours of the election. In his post election 2000 review, Godfrey Sperling, columnist for the Christian Science Monitor called John Zogby "champion pollster."
Since 1996, Zogby has polled for Reuters News Agency, the largest news agency in the world, and from 2000 to 2004 polled for NBC News. His clients also include MSNBC, CNBC, the Democrat and Chronicle, the New York Post, Fox News, Knight-Ridder Newspapers, Gannett News Service, the Houston Chronicle, the Miami Herald, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Albany Times Union, the Buffalo News, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Syracuse Herald, and nearly every daily newspaper in New York State, as well as television stations throughout the U.S. Zogby is also a founding contributor to the prestigious website, The Huffington Post (www.huffingtonpost.com.).
The talk is sponsored by "Politics and Media Constructions: Anticipating the 2008 Election," one of nine programs of The Humanities Project, which highlights interdepartmental works by University faculty in the humanities through a variety of events.
